Would You Be You

written by Lynne Brooks copyright 2006

Just for this moment imagine yourself free
Without all your stories relax and just be

When you start to think I am this and this and that
Try dropping one this and see if you’re still that

At first you may find this game is not easy
You might even feel fizzy and dizzy and queasy

Start with something simple to put you in the game
Think of what you call yourself think of your name

Your name, your name, your name you think and all that it entails
How it looks and how it sounds and all of its details

Now think of you without your name
Do you think you’d look and feel the same?

At first you might think its right to be called something new
Or maybe you think your name is the grandest thing that’s you

These thoughts may be true and I might even agree
But just for this game think deeper and see

Without your thoughts of your name for this game
Would you be you all the same?

Would you be you without your stories you tell?
Would you be you without the work that you sell?
Would you be you if your body was pink

You would be you no matter what you think

You can think right you can think wrong
You can think weak you can think strong
You can think rich you can think poor
You can think till you can’t think no more!

You can think till you think “No More!”

This is the time in the game you might say
I quit this game there’s no point to play

But I ask you please stay and play
Just for this moment just for today

When you’re too tired to go on and too tired to think
That’s when you know you’ve reached the brink

The brink is the place to be brave and leap

Soar through the air and swim in the sea
Be an elephant on the back of a bee

Are you still you floating along with the clouds
Are you still you big and brave and loud
Are you still you tiny and quiet and sweet

You are always you I’m always happy to meet

You are always you no matter what you think
So why not think the best of you
Because the best of you I think
